Flow Magazine

Ocean conservation magazine design

“Ocean currents are vital for the health of our oceans and for marine life”

The objective of this project was to choose a natural phenomena as a starting point to design a predominantly image based magazine.

The Idea

Flow magazine is dedicated to the topic of water currents. In this first Issue the magazine focuses on water currents as influencers of the aquatic food web.

The visual narrative of the magazine starts with the smallest members of the food web, the ones that rely on currents to survive and evolves into how preserving balance in our oceans is vital for humanity.

This project is inspired by nature documentary “Our Planet”, presented by Netflix in partnership with the WWF.

My Role

It all started as a way to communicate via printed media about the importance of taking care of our oceans and ecosystems. I designed the different layouts of the magazine and edited the images.

Along the way I started to experiment with paint and the resulting pattern was incorporated into the layouts.

After I printed my first edition of the magazine, I realized I wasn’t done with the concept and now a days I have gotten commissioned for paintings inspired in this project.

Pattern Process

A hand painted pattern of a visual interpretation of a water current flows through the pages of the magazine.

The pattern represents not just the current and the movement, but also the fact that every organism in the ocean, no matter how big or small, plays a vital role in the balance of a healthy ocean.

Including the pattern in the magazine helped bring the concept all together and it became an essential component in the visual communication of the project.

Typography

For this project I chose Avant Garde Gothic because of its geometric structure, it emphasizes the scientific substance of this highly visual magazine. It complements the story of ocean conservation.
